k. So the rules for 250 production require the stock muffler My bike came with an aftermarket muffler and I'm trying to find a stock one for cheap I found one, but it's missing the chrome heat shield So it's that piece there I'm assuming that without that piece it would be considering altered, but figured I would check. So yah I wondering if it would be "legal" without that section?
Jay Tait ran all last year without the chrome parts. It's still legal provided the muffler has not been altered internally.
The discussion at the rule book meeting was to change the 250 rules to reflect Supersport rules, that would mean "a stock unmolested street legal exhaust can" but not necessarily a stock 250 muffler. That would be a change in the rules from 2011. I don't know if that made into the 2012 rule book or not. The 250 cup series might have different rules than WMRC at Mission since it will run on 2 different tracks with different sound requirements. Greg Moore may allow aftermarket exhausts if they meet the sound requirements, however WMRC rules at Mission will require a stock muffler of some kind but until the 2012 rules are published we don't know which.
I am with Angus, the rule as discussed and agreed upon was to reflect the SS/"Mission" rule of a oem, stock production street muffler, being mechanically baffled and unmolested(no gutting).Meaning ANY stock production street muffler etc. This rule gives racers options when building a race bike from say a crashed or ex street modified bike or buying a race prepped 250 that only has a race system.(See Shawn Beckers 250s for sale) The other reason for this is to encourage visiting racers.A 250 racer can replace his race only muffler with a street legal muffler just like visiting 600 racers.
That too is my understanding. It must be a stock muffler. Stock from which bike? It doesn't matter. As long as the innards are working and not gutted, it's good to go. You should see those published rules out soon. I've also posted those notes in the forums here: http://www.westwoodracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5544 It states for 250s: "stock unmolested mechanically baffled muffler is required". It does not specify 250 stock, just stock. I also believe that there was one statement that will get a few people. That was, "if it's not expressly allowed, it's not" That way if we miss something, people cannot take the creative route and circumvent the spirit of the rules.
So Mksiemens as Dean said, anything that bolts on to the outside of the muffler may be removed as long as the muffler body itself or it's internals haven't been modified.
UPDATE The 250 class is supersport rules, meaning any exhaust system is allowed as long as the bike meets the sound limit at Mission.
I thought this thread was dead but it has been looked at multiple times recently, so I just wanted to bring some guests up to speed.
As they say, losing 10+ lbs is better than spending thousands of dollars on engine mods and light weight parts. Maybe there should be a ballast compensation or handicap rule for the gravitationally enhanced?
